History

CHAPTER — 1: Previous history. Many years ago before BOSCO era

At the beginning there was a body. First Olympians, who competed on Ellas coasts in speed and skills preferred to do it naked. That was not only convenient — Greeks were proud of their physical perfection and did not hide it. Then Olympic Games «fell into history» for a long time, and when revived, sportsmen had already been dressed.

In 1936, the Olympic Charter was changed so that the uniform team dress became obligatory for all national teams. That was the year of the Berlin Olympiad held in fascist Germany. At that very time the national dignity problem was especially acute. In Berlin the French team wore berets — symbols of the French spirit, the British — straw boaters, and the Egyptians — fezes. Another splash of interest to national motives in the Olympic form burst in 70-s — 80-s, when many Asian and African countries joined the Olympic Games. Their appearance at the opening ceremony was the chance to show original cultural traditions and to declare of themselves.

In France, over the long time clothes for Olympians were made by world-famous designers — in various years — «Coco Chanel», twice — «Pierre Cardin» and «Yves Saint-Laurent». Cooperation of big sport and high fashion discontinued in 1984, the last was the Olympiad in Los Angeles. Since 1984, everyday and parade uniform for the French team has been made by firms having nothing to do with haute couture or prкt-а-porter. This is explained by the fact that the competition form made by famous designers was several times expensive in comparison with that manufactured, and a result was often unpredictable. Thus, in 1999, upon conclusion of a contract with Tommy Hilfiger for three successive Olympiads, the American Olympic Committee has canceled its cooperation with the designer whereas variants proposed by him were for rappers rather than for sportsmen. As a consequence American sportsmen went to Sidney Games dressed by Canadian company Routs.

For the USSR the question of clothes for the national Olympic team has always been one of the most principal ones because the whole world gained a general impression of the country by sportsmen’s clothes. This was a reason that the Soviet competition form had to be not only functional, but also propagating the socialist way of life. The outfit for the Olympic delegation had always passed a lot of approving instances up to the party leadership. Before 1980, the competition form was designed by the All-Union Model House, and then by the Model House for Sports Clothes. Before 1988 sports suits were sewed in Armenia. A special department of the State Sports Committee (Goskomsport) had a contract with the factory in Erevan. After the «perestroika» the national uniform for the Soviet sportsmen was sewed in Yugoslavia, designer’s parade collections for Winter Games — 94 in Lillehammer, and for Summer Games — 96 in Atlanta were made by Valentin Yudashkin. At Sidney Olympic Games 2000, the Russians were dressed by Sarba Srl (Italy).

Modern Olympic clothes are divided into three categories: parade, everyday (clothes Olympians must wear during the Games out-of-doors in the Olympic village) and the uniform for competitions. At each Olympiad the national team shall have its own original outfit. The International Olympic Committee prohibited repetition of the uniform from year to year.

CHAPTER 2: Beginning. First stage of BOSCO era. Salt Lake City

Winter Olympic Games XIX were held from February 8 to February 22, 2002 in Salt Lake City (America). 77 countries competed for 75 medals in 7 sports. Russia was fifth in the team event (5 golden, 4 silver and 4 bronze medals).

Winter Olympic Games XIX stuck in memory by numerous dope scandals, unfair refereeing and the event unprecedented for the whole history of Winter Olympic Games — Canadian pair Samie Sale — David Pelletier was given the second golden Olympic medals and went up to the pedestal together with Russians — Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze. Besides, Games in Salt Lake City were first ones, where the national Russian team appeared in bright, recognizable and well memorable red-white-blue uniform of BOSCO. Soon this uniform will receive the worldwide recognition and become the first successful Russian sports brand of the latest time.

BOSCO appeared in 2001 as a specialized unit of BOSCO DI CILIEGI group of companies involved in designing, manufacturing, distribution, sale, marketing and promotion of clothes for sports and active rest. It was the first national brand of the Olympic outfit, which has created not only an absolutely original product — Olympic clothes, but also a new ideology based on the pride for its country and openness to the whole world.

To win beautifully means to win honestly. When the strongest wins among the best. When the air around is vibrating from human tension. Another moment — and success will choose its hero. And this will be a very beautiful moment because the success is beautiful by its definition. That is why the slogan of BOSCО Sport is Beauty of success.

The first Olympic BOSCO collection for Salt Lake City Games consisted of 32 articles of clothes, footwear and accessories. The design was based on the national idea — the color of the Russian flag and the national ornament. The Russian Olympic Committee filed an application for making of sports clothes not long before the Games. — Initial agreements concerned only the parade uniform for the Russian team.

The parade uniform is not designed for competitions or going up to the pedestal. Though the parade Olympic uniform is a one day clothes, it creates the first impression of the country. The parade uniform is designed for competitions and receiving medals. Sportsmen wear it only once — at the Official Ceremony of Olympiad Opening. But this once «costs» three billion looks in the whole world. Therefore there exist a tacit competition among countries — whose team will be the brightest, most beautiful and rememberable. The parade uniform created by BOSCO traditionally appeals to historical motives. The parade collection 2002 traced back to the beginning of the 20th century thereby paying tribute to Russian great sportsmen, who participated in Olympic Games 1908. Men were offered a coat «a la Shalyapin», made of «baby-lama» wool. The coat was complemented by a stylish collar and a patty-hat of unsheared beaver fur. Women were offered a coat «a la Russian Snegurochka». A cozy beaver sleeve and a tablet hat turned to be unexpected accessories. The parade suit was complemented by original felt «farewell to youth» boots with galoshes made at the Russian factory «Krasny Bogatyr».

On January 15, 2002, the Outfit Center was opened on the Red Square in GUM. On the first day the Olympic uniform was granted to sports veterans — legendary skater Lidia Skoblikova, who won 6 golden Olympic medals (entered in the Guinness Book of Records), captain of the hockey team Victor Kuzkin, the first Olympic USSR championess (1956) skier Lyubov Baranova, skater Evgeny Grishin, skiers Evgeny Belyaev and Alexei Prokurorov.

Alexei Yagudin (Salt Lake City Olympic champion in figure-skating): «I remember the time, when we enviously looked at figure-skaters from USA, Canada and other countries. But everything has changed in Salt Lake City in 2002, after appearance of BOSCO outfit. And now with each new Olympiad BOSCO outfit is becoming more interesting, higher — grade and brighter. Now others are envious of us! And our fans are the most noticeable and happy!»

CHAPTER 3: Second stage of BOSCO era. Athens

Summer Olympic Games XXVIII were held from August 13 to August 29, 2004 on their native historical land — in the capital of Greece — Athens. 10 625 sportsmen from 201 countries competed for 301 medals in 28 sports. The Olympic Games were visited by 3 875 479 people. Russia was third in the team event (27 golden, 27 silver and 38 bronze medals).

Summer Olympic Games XXVIII stuck in memory by unprecedented safety measures — that was the first Olympiad after the terroristic act on September 11, dope scandals and unexplainable referees’ errors. This dry and protocol line hides the tragedy of Alexei Nemov — arbiters deprived him of the Olympic medal, having underscored him in artistic gymnastics. And the gold «lost» by Svetlana Khorkina, who by the decision of the judging panel gave to Carly Rae Patterson from USA only several thousandth points. We supported our swimmers and basketballers, fighters and fencers. Complimented Elena Isinbaeva and Yury Borzakovsky, Alina Kabaeva and Aleksander Povetkin on their «gold». Cheburashka was the first mascot of our team in the Athens Olympiad, and Russian supporters on tribunes were in the Olympic team uniform. — «Ours» became seen from afar.

On October 23, 2003, BOSCO DI CILIEGI and the Russian Olympic Committee made an official declaration on signature of the sponsor agreement for a period of Games XXVIII of Olympiad 2004 in Athens and Winter Olympic Games XX 2006 in Turin. Within the framework of this agreement BOSCO DI CILIEGI would act as the General Sponsor and exclusive outfitter for the Russian Olympic team.

On August 13, 2004, over 500 Russian Olympians took part in the parade of sportsmen on the opening ceremony of Summer Olympic Games. This ceremony was seen by over 2 billion people from 220 countries of the world. On arena of the main Olympic stadium in Athens girls from the Russian team appeared in light blouses, pleated skirts and berets, and boys — in T-shirts and caps, obliquely set. They were like coming down from posters of thirties continuing the Red Square parade from the famous film «Circus» of Gregory Aleksandrov. The thirties in the USSR were the time of development of mass physical culture and sports movement. However the Soviet Union did not participate in the Olympic Games 1936 in Berlin. Therefore, several generations of Soviet sportsmen could not participate in the main event of the planet. A set of the parade uniform 2004 resulted from cooperation of BOSCO DI CILIEGI group of companies and world-famous Italian fashion house Etro S.P.A.

For the first time, Cheburashka went to Athens Olympic Games as a member of the national team. Cheburashka at the Olympiad was also an idea of BOSCО Sport. Thanks to our good graces this animated hero made his first appearance in 2004 as a mascot of the Russian team.
Writer Edward Uspensky, Cheburashka’s father: «I think it is a good choice. If crocodile Gena or cat Matroskin were proposed as the Olympic mascots, I would be very surprised. Cheburashka serves the purpose very good. He is kind, uniting people, not talking large, homelike… He is what is wanted for the Olympiad aimed at formation of contacts among countries.»
Cheburashka has become one of the main heroes of «Russian Bosco Club» in Athens. The Russian House was located in the private residence, in which the Russian Embassy was located at the beginning of the last century. It was the place of rest and recovery of poise for members of the Russian team. BOSCО Sport is traditionally responsible for cosiness, food and atmosphere in the Russian House. On this «small island of the native land» sportsmen meet the press, and foreign guests acquaint themselves with traditions and hospitality of the Great Power.

The Russian House is a place, where winners are honored, losers are consoled, tasty home dishes are served and family concerts are conducted. The tradition to bring artists to the Olympic Games had appeared as far back as in Soviet times, when actors and singers were included in the national team as masseuses, benchwarmers and coaches in order they could be included as the «creative team of support» in the official delegation. Therefore from its first Olympiad in Salt Lake City BOSCО Sport brings a «team of friends» to Games consisting of famous actors, stage directors, musicians, TV presenters — people, who are well — known, loved and trusted in Russia. They are the loudest supporters on tribunes dressed in red and white uniforms always finding right words before the important start.

The day before the Athens Olympiad, another very important event took place in Moscow. For the first time in the history of the national Olympic movement the Olympic uniform became available for all desirous — the first BOSCO-SPORT store was opened in GUM. In Athens not only Russian sportsmen, but also supporters on tribunes were recognizable. Their harmonious shouting «Russia, ahead!» were not only hearable but also visible.
Alexei NEMOV (artistic gymnastics): There are such old-line sportswear brands as Reebok, Nike, Adidas. BOSCO took the best of them and has adapted to our country. Our uniform is known in the whole world due to competent, efficient and proper activities of BOSCO. In Athens we changed suits with sportsmen from other countries — one ours for three theirs. I am pleased to wear things from former collections of BOSCO, for example, when living in the country, simply relaxing in them.»

CHAPTER 4: Second stage of BOSCO era. TURIN

Winter Olympic Games XX were held in Turin, capital of Piedmont (Italy), from February till February 26, 2006. 2508 sportsmen from 80 countries competed for 84 medals in 7 sports. Russia was fourth in the team event (8 golden, 6 silver and 8 bronze medals). Winter Olympic Games XX stuck in memory by unexpected gold of skier Evgenia Medvedeva in duathlon, silver of Albert Demchenko in tobogganing, three golden medals in figure-skating, the fourth place of our hockey team and the first field BOSCO stores opened in Turin for the time of the Olympiad.

Winter Olympic Games XX were solemnly opened on February 10, 2006, by the President of Italy Carlo Azeglio Ciampi. Russians appeared on the opening ceremony in red and white parade suits, consisting of Ermanno Scervino down — padded coats with fur collars, knitted sweater and dark-red trousers. Other elements of parade collections — blazer of dark blue wool, dark gray trousers, white shirt and white knitted waistcoat were designed by Etro. For official receptions man’s tie with Olympic symbolics and woman’s neckerchief were offered, for informal receptions — jeans. A set of the parade uniform also included man’s chamois brown boots of Fratelli Rosetti and woman’s graceful fur bottines of Pollini with lacing and low heels. The style and image of the parade uniform was represented again in the historical view, which traced back to Italian mountain resorts of 60-s of the 20th century.

Articles of sports collections Torino-2006 met all quality standards of «professional» winter clothes made of waterproofing, windproof textiles (even zip fasteners were water-proof), having-warm keeping cowls and backing, regulated turns and collar. Model sketches were made by Bosco di Ciliegi Family specialists together with Italian designers specially invited to participate in that project, and collections — by the largest Italian concern Basic Net S. P. A.

A set of the uniform issued to each member of the Russian delegation at the Olympic Games in Turin, consisted of 39 articles: all things needed for trainings, everyday life, official events and, certainly, a suite for the victory ceremony — the so-called «medal» one. Sportsmen got two warm-keeping suits, training suits, warm-keeping waistcoats and knitted things, training shoes and winter boots, scarves and gloves, winter hats and baseball caps, as well as a «travel set» — a backpack, a purse and gum bags. Exteriorly the form was not much different from the uniform of our sportsmen at two previous Olympiads — in Salt Lake City — 2002 and Athens — 2004. The same red and white color gamma, the same twisted conventional flower design, which became an original visiting card of the Russian team. Each trifle on the uniform was thought out and each detail was thoroughly verified.

In 2006, the national symbol first appeared on the Olympic uniform of BOSCO. Before 2005, there were no uniform principles for placement of national symbols on sports clothes. Team identity of athletes was recognized only by suites in the national tricolour. That was not very convenient, because: firstly, Russian coulors coincided with national colours of other countries (for example, Serbia, France, Holland, etc.), secondly, more often than not the colour of the sports uniform was determined by rules of competitions but not the team management. At the beginning of 2005, an order was issued to use the image of the national emblem of the Russian Federation designed by the Federal Physical Culture and Sports Agency jointly with the Heraldic Council of the Russian President. The current distinction of each Russian sportsman was the golden double eagle in crowns with the sceptre and the ball. The eagle had to be placed on the chest, at the center, on the left or on the shoulder, where chevron was usually sewed on.

Russian Olympic symbolics 2006 were like hot cakes in Turin. BOSCO opened its stores for the time of the Olympiad there. There was no room sufficient for all desirous in a store, therefore guards at entrance let in and let out buyers in groups. Baseball caps with the inscription — Russia, pendants with Russian Olympic symbolics and Cheburashka of all sizes went sell like hot cakes. The Russian national team came in Turin in white winter color.

Svetlana ZHUROVA (Turin Olympic championess in ice-skating):
«I still have all my Turin uniform and wear it with pleasure when going mountain skis. And my victorious one-piecer in which I was skating is kept at home for long memory. It is possible that in time I will grant it to the Olympic Movement Museum in Lausanne. In Turin foreigners were ready to give any sums of money for BOSCO uniform — everybody liked it very much. Thanks to BOSCO people from the whole world came to recognize Russian sportsmen. If previously our Olympians differed from others only by the inscription — Russiа on the back of the smock, now we are distinguished by the ornament only. It is great that BOSCO uniform can be bought in a store. It has united supporters and sportsmen. Seeing people on tribunes in the same form gives an additional and very intensive stimulus.»

CHAPTER 5: Third stage of BOSCO era. Peking

Summer Olympic Games XXIX were held in Peking, capital of China People’s Republic from August 8 to August 24, 2008. 11 099 sportsmen from 204 countries of the world competed for 302 medals in 28 sports. Russia was third in the team event (23 golden, 21 silver and 29 bronze medals).

Summer Olympic Games XXIX stuck in memory by ideal organization, domination of Chinese sportsmen, phenomenal demonstration of American swimmer Michael Phelps, the twenty fifth world record of Elena Isinbaeva, reached 5, 05 m height in Peking and the pedestal at the tennis tournament wholly occupied by women from Russia.

The solemn ceremony for opening of the Olympiad in Peking was held on August 8, at 8 o’clock 8 minutes on the 8th month of 2008. In the Chinese culture figure 8 is considered as the most favourable one. It symbolizes happiness, wealth and prosperity. People in China are sure that if this figure exists in a man’s life — he or she will be a success. When making new Olympic collections BOSCO designers have thoroughly worked associations with numerous symbols of the Chinese culture. The flowery pattern used in three previous Olympiads was replaced by a stylized eight made of the Firebird wings. The result was not a simple magic image of Russian fairy tales embodying the dream of good luck and prosperity, but a symbol of happiness in China.

From Olympiad to Olympiad a wardrobe of a member of the Russian Olympic team was expanding in geometric progression. Sportsmen, who went to Peking received 62 articles — for taking exercises, everyday use, official events, and opening ceremony. That time the design of the parade uniform was inspired by memorials of Moscow Youth and Students Festival 1957. Relationships between the Soviet and Chinese people were very friendly. In 2008, Russian sportsmen appeared at Peking stadium in elegant suites of the Russian thricolour. For men — a classical blue jacket in combination with light and beige trousers, for women — fitted red with beige skirt. A breast pocket had the Russian emblem on. A set also consisted of white linen side collar shirt with red embroidery of the Firebird feathers on cuffs and collar. Besides, a set of the parade uniform for women was decorated by an original white square bag.

BOSCО Sport issued several lines especially for Russian supporters by the time of the Olympiad in Peking — original, basic, сasual, children and souvenir.

Original — Olympic — a replicate of the Russian Olympic team outfit Basic — Basic — a collection of man’s and woman’s everyday clothes for taking exercises: sports suites, smocks, sports trousers, T-shirts, polo shirts. Сasual — special lines in addition to everyday clothes for summer sports — tennis, swimming, football and jogging. Backing of jackets and waistcoats bears the Firebird feather ornament with effect of jacquard. The line has a beach collection of clothes and accessories in white, red and blue color gamma. Children — a line for children from two months to two years made of special soft tissue, as well as for elder children: smocks, sports suites, T-shirts, training shoes. Souvenir — T-shirts and badge bearing Cheburashka image, representing summer sports. By the time of the Olympiad in Peking Cheburashka has turned red. In China this colour symbolizes an absolute and endless luck.
Besides, sports fans could select «Olympic» purses, backpacks, bags, training shoes, baseball caps. Presentation of the Olympic uniform took place in St. Petersburg, within the framework of St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
The complete outfit for each member of the Russian team cost over 100 thousand roubes.

Andrei Kirilenko (basket-ball): «The uniform is very sensible and quite bright. And this is a good solution because Russia shall be outlined against other teams. It’s great that the uniform is very creative and at the same time, such element as a side collar shirt reflects our popular traditions».

CHAPTER 6: Third stage of BOSCO era. Vancouver

Winter Olympic Games XXI were held in Canadian Vancouver, capital of British Columbia from February 12 to February 28, 2010. 2 574 sportsmen from 82 countries competed for 86 medals in 7 sports. Russia was eleventh in the team event (3 golden, 5 silver and 7 bronze awards).

Winter Olympic Games XXI stuck in memory by the tragedy happened with Georgian tobogganer Nodar Kumaritashvili, who crashed during a training round several hours before the Solemn Opening Ceremony. A technical fault during the ceremony — non — opening of one of the Olympic fire cup elements. Numerous traumas among Olympians: bobbers, tobogganers, alpinist and skiers. That Olympiad was hard for Russia. We dread Russia — Canada hockey match, voluntary program of Evgeny Plyuschenko, for which he took only the second place, first unlucky starts of Russian biathletes. And therefore the first Olympic silver of skater Ivan Skobrev was dearer for us than the gold. Russians took the first place only three times — by the final of the Olympiad their names were known to the entire country. — Evgeny Ustyugov — biathlon, Nikita Kryukov — ski sprint, Olga Medvedtseva, Olga Zaitseva, Svetlana Sleptsova and Anna Bogaly — woman’s biathlon relay.

The official uniform of the Russian team at Winter Olympic and Para Olympic Games in Vancouver came on sale in BOSCО Sport stores on December 1, 2009 — three months before opening of the Games. The new collection was not simply bright and patriotic, but also complementary to the host country. Canadians actively used symbols of American Indians in decoration of the Olympiad. Therefore the element of the former pattern — the Firebird feather was rethought in BOSCО Sport collections. That time it was represented in mirror reflection. The contour of the new pattern resembled horns and traced back to totemic figures of animals. (Totem is a clan emblem as well as an idol animal name.) Visually in man’s models this pattern made the figure slender and broader in shoulders, and in woman’s models — underlined the small waist. Another peculiarity of the collections were contrast insets, which also made the visually figure longer and more slender. In such suits not only sportsmen themselves but all supporters of the Russian team looked sport — like.

Several lines of clothes were issued for Russian supporters:
Casual — sensible clothing for every day uniting sport and fashion. Down-padded coats, anoraks, waistcoats, leather bombers, elegant man’s coats and woman’s outercoats with raccoon fur welting. Classical dark blue jeans and velvet trousers — for knitted sweaters, fleece and velvet suits with embroidery.

Sport — for professional sportsmen and sport fans.
The basis of the collection is formed of sports polyether suites made applying the latest technologies of ski mountaineering clothes: waterproofing, windproof textiles, regulated turns and collars, internal elastic skirt for snow protection, pockets for necessary trifles — there is no saying what may be needed on the mountainside. A new article in the collection was a snowboarding suite. A special wide cutout made it possible to use protection during trainings. In spite of numerous elements of decoration, fittings and special warmth-keeping elements it turned to be incredibly light, after the latest snowboarding fashion. Suit fabric was made especially by order and in addition to moisture-repelling treatment has a unique prominent pattern — again in the form of the Firebird feather. Vancouver collection represented a record number of accessories — hats, scarves with the inscription RUSSIA, mittens of various models and colours, with ornament and decoration. Knitted reggae peak caps, hats with earflaps decorated by raccoon and rabbit fur. Hats with braids, knitted bandages, baseball caps with contrast stitching, a wide choice of gum bags and footwear. For severe winter — stylish fur boots and snow boots, for sports hall and warm days — training shoes. And one more thing — gum bags for outfit and footwear, spacious travelling on wheels, backpacks and belt — bags&hellip

Ivan Skobrev — winner of the Olympiad in Vancouver (ice-skating): «If you have medals you will like the uniform. But it is a joke. BoscoSport uniform is really very bright and beautiful. It has already become a part of the Russian team. For me it turned to be lucky. I liked T-shirts very much, a cotton sport suite. By the way, I know about signature of a contract between the Russian ice-skating Federation and BoscoSport. So, I hope that soon we will skate in Your, no in OUR form!»

CHAPTER 7: Fourth stage of BOSCO era. SOCHI IS CALLING!

BOSCО Sport team has joined the Sochi election race from the first meters of the distance. Already in Turin, when the Russian application was just considered by the International Olympic Committee, the Russian House — BOSCO Village already had its Krasnaya Polyana. At that time the sporting world had find out that people went skiing in the Black Sea region. We were approaching to this Olympiad together with those, who believed in success. By the final voting of the International Olympic Committee in Guatemala, we have created the parade uniform for the official delegation, in which blue — the coulor of sky and snow in Sochi — predominated. The stars of figure-skating in BOSCO clothes appeared in Guatemala on the artificial ice rink, built in the Central America unexpectedly for all. Sochi had won and on July 4th, 2007, it was declared as the host of Winter Olympic Games XXII. BOSCО Sport celebrated this desired event by issuance of a new collections of sports clothes SOCHI 2014.

Vancouver passed the Olympic baton to Sochi at the solemn closure of the Olympiad. Russia will first act as a host of Winter Olympic Games. We all have been waiting for this event for a long time. The status of a host receiving guests from every corner of the world is much obliging. Now Sochi is a city being reconstructed and decorated by the whole country. For BOSCО Sport it is an important, interesting and, foremost, large-scale project, for which we are prepared because we have grown up and we have experience. Not only the national Olympic team but also tens of thousands volunteers will be dressed in BOSCО Sport patriotic uniform.

On October 28, 2009, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee announced that BOSCO had been awarded General Partner status for the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Games in the Sochi 2014 Clothing category.
  • The deal, worth over $100 mln, grants BOSCO the following official status:
    • Exclusive Outfitter of the Russian Olympic and Paralympic teams (at Vancouver 2010, London 2012, Sochi 2014 and Rio de Janeiro 2016) and General Partner of the Russian Olympic and Paralympic teams (in respect to each team at the 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 Games);
    • General Partner of the XXII Olympic Winter Games 2014 and XI Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.
BOSCO also signed the licensing agreement with the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee according to which BOSCO becomes official producer of licensed clothes with the Olympic symbols for the period up to and including 2016.
